Nintendo needs new franchises for rebound

It’s not the first time I doubted Nintendo. Recent sales have plummeted for the Japanese video game maker. Year on year sales show increases for Microsoft and Sony but Nintendo is seeing a -30% shift. Especially worrisome trends are that the handheld sales are decreasing for both Sony and Nintendo. Apple must be gaining a lot of market share as Nintendo has never had negative year on year handheld sales figures since the first DS was introduced.

Even the diehard Nintendo fans admit, there just haven’t been anything ‘new’ from Nintendo for a while now. The X and Y generation have gotten older and as they mature the need for more mature rated games are a must! Not saying Mario needs to start slaying some vampires but a new franchise would not hurt.

For pete’s sakes, just release Nintendo 3DS already and stop the bleed! If you have some Nintendo stocks, now may be the time to diversify.

Nintendo cooked the golden goose

This expression is simply awesome.

The article makes a lot of sense. Nintendo has been doing horribly on the content front and is finally starting to feel some heat coming from Sony. The PlayStation 3 was able to overtake Wii sales in Japan simply due to the release of Final Fantasy XIII demo.

Let this be a lesson, people have short attention span. If you don’t have new content you will die, doesn’t matter how innovative you are.

360 cheaper than Wii in Japan

Well, last piece of news that I felt like sharing before I call it a night. Microsoft is working hard to gain marketshare off of hot releases like Tales of Vesperia and Infinite Undiscovery, two sort of good but not great JRPGs (I think the new Tales would probably be slightly better and actually worth playing) and dropped the price on the Xbox 360 Arcade model $50 below the Nintendo Wii.

This puts Nintendo at a great disadvantage because the Arcade is merely the same Xbox 360 without the hard disk drive. It does lack wireless controller as well but hey, its controllers are cheap compared to the Wiimote + Nunchuk combo. Wired controller isn’t going to kill you either, since it’ll let you play all the games!

Either way this is big news. September 7 price drop in the Americas is definitely happening. Please Microsoft, you need to start that global domination that you once dreamed of so I can finally feel content about still not owning any PS3 software.

Nintendo 2010 – 2011 lineup

Gerstmann and the gang confirmed Nintendo’s 2010 – 2011 lineup of games. Looks alright except:

I’m convinced that there must have been more games actually announced during that thing. Anyway, you all probably remember the feelings of disappointment as very few games specifically for people who play games already were shown.

Now, if you read these new quotes a specific way, you could take them to mean that Nintendo’s going to keep riding the family train until at least 2010 and leave you wondering why you waited out in front of a store to buy a Wii the second they were released. Or you could take them to mean what it says: that the games from the “popular core franchises” that Nintendo is known for are going to take awhile.
