Conspiracy theory: Consoles’ technological parity = PC sales down, Mac sales up
It makes perfect sense now.
Video game consoles’ video cards no longer suck. PlayStation 3 is powered by a NVIDIA designed chip and Xbox 360 is powered by an ATI designed chip.
This drives the Mac sales up because people no longer rely on their computers as the sole home computers.

The state of union in the hardware space
Recently GameSpot has published a graphics comparison between popular titles (link below) that sparked a huge flame war on their comments board. Most people accused GameSpot from skewed view of the opposition and declared suspicious funding movements. I don’t think GameSpot really skews much if any at all. The compared titles were the best-sellers from recent memory. Something that may be recent but lack the sales figures such as DMC4 is omitted is something I can understand.
Here’s the deal. CBS has now taken CNET out of the debt situation that may have induced to the recent firings and leaves. I doubt CBS’s interest is anymore than skewed than GameSpot’s. They are gigantic, any money from Microsoft doesn’t do them that much more good. There is no incentive for CBS to be a puppet to Microsoft.
The graphic comparisons is lame. But it goes to show that most developers have upheld the development characteristics of utilizing 360 as the main platform. If this continues and I suspect it will. Exclusives and internal developments would become more and more of something that Sony needs to spend money on if they can’t make much more money on 3rd party multiplatform titles. This is a bad situation for Sony at the moment. It needs to do something fast that would draw more users pledging 3rd party allegiance to the PS3 in order for developers to start considering using PS3 as the main development platform.
I personally have all 3 consoles + a Core 2 based enthusiast computer with powerful dedicated GPU. I still find myself drawn to Xbox 360′s moddability. Playing ripped 360 titles on your Xbox is so enjoyable it defeats any DRM attempts that may frustrate you on the PC.
PS3 wins hands down when it comes to media compatibility. Been playing H.264/AVC or VC-1 encoded video files ever since this option became available. Now with recently added DTS-MA. What a treat! I stream all of my video files off my PC to the PS3 through a home network.
Computer is still used frequently. Mainly serves as the platform for online shooters (sorry, sometimes the controllers don’t do twitch shooters justice). Also it is my main storage hub. A 1TB drive for immediate system and a 500 GB active backup by delta (even better method than incremental backups). It acts as the utility tool as well when I need to rip certain media. The workstation for those long nights away from the office.
Wii is neat, but the appeal quickly dissipated. But this is the best platform for party games! Mario games will be a staple in your social life.
Mobile scene is even more fantastic.
My PSP receives most attention from me. Since it’s also a modder’s dream, I frequently try out new things. My DS is hardly used nowadays. Although the unit is also easily modded, and the type of games are neat but the level of graphic detail saddens me. There’s no reason why we should be drastically traveling back in time in terms of visuals.
So there is your unbiased synopsis of the current generation in terms of utility.
Antec Nine Hundred
New case is pretty damn sweet. Although I replaced all the Antec TriCool fans with Scythe S-FLEX, it still performs great with much lower temperatures over my old Lian Li.
Here’s the cooling setup:
- Scythe Ninja Rev. B, regular Scythe fan, 1200 RPM, 39 CFM, 20 dBa
- Top 200 mm fan, 400 RPM, 83 CFM, 24 dBa
- 2 x Front 120 mm Scythe S-FLEX fan, 800 RPM, 33 CFM, 8.7 dBa
- Rear 120 mm Scythe S-FLEX fan, 800 RPM, 33 CFM, 8.7 dBA
So I got in total 5 fans in this case including the CPU fan. With the possibility of adding 2 additional case fans and 1 additional CPU fan, this setup is pretty awesome at cooling. Since the top fan is the limiting factor for noise level. It hums quite nicely at 24 dBa. Which is still acceptable from my Lian Li’s 20 dBA. The Antec is steal made so the hard drives don’t vibrate as loudly so I guess it evens out in the end.
- Temperature for my E6300 Conroe: 37 C idle, 50 C load.
- Old Lian Li temperatures: 56 C idle, 62 C load.
Highly recommended for anyone who wants a silent cool case.
